Reliability Insights

Early Electronic Era
2001–2008

An early peak characterized by foundational issues in new models, particularly with transmissions and early electronics. Models like the first-generation XC90 and S80 experienced significant power train problems and early electrical system integration challenges as Volvo transitioned to more complex electronic architectures.

SPA Platform & Infotainment Era
2015–2018

The highest peak in complaint volume, coinciding with the introduction of the SPA platform (new XC90, S90/V90, XC60). This era is dominated by electrical and equipment issues, especially related to the new Sensus infotainment system, alongside significant engine complaints concerning oil consumption. The 2016 peak represents Volvo's most challenging reliability period.

Model‑Specific Highlights

XC90 (2003–Present)

Volvo's most complained-about model with 5,214 complaints. The first generation (2003-2006) was plagued by automatic transmission failures. The second generation, launched in 2016, triggered the manufacturer's highest-ever peak in complaints, primarily centered on ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and EQUIPMENT issues, including the Sensus infotainment screen freezing, rebooting, and losing functionality. Engine oil consumption was also prevalent.

S60 (2000–Present)

With 4,016 complaints, the S60 peaked around 2012-2016 model years. The most dominant issue is excessive oil consumption, categorized under ENGINE complaints. Other major issues include ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and general EQUIPMENT failures. There's a noticeable gap between the high volume of specific oil consumption complaints and targeted, effective TSBs addressing the root cause for all affected owners.

XC60 (2009–Present)

The XC60's 3,939 complaints spiked with the redesigned 2018 model year. Primary complaints revolve around EQUIPMENT and ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, mirroring XC90 problems. Owners frequently report infotainment system issues, phantom braking from collision avoidance systems, and various electronic glitches. SERVICE BRAKES complaints are also more prominent for the XC60 compared to other top models.
